My AI says:

Posted on 1 December, 20221 December, 2022 by wpadmin

I checked a text generation AI and got this: “I wrote about this time I stayed at my Aunt mountain house when I was a kid and it was fun, and I thought I’d be sitting at the camp in the car or something. It’s not a real camping trip, but I was in the…

Project INSITE-X: Learning complexity

Posted on 29 June, 20214 May, 2022 by Gunnar Mathiason

In our new industrial project we aim for a better simulation of complex machines processes in steel rolling. Deep Learning may capture this complexity to be able to simulate detailed in-production behavior. News release from the funding agency Vinnova/PiiA newsletter [in Swedish] Högskolan i Skövde newsroom [in Swedish]Voister article [in Swedish]Project web page [in English]

House rules for the Hybrid Office

Posted on 4 May, 202126 August, 2021 by Gunnar Mathiason

Yes, we have gotten quite good at Zoom meetings by now. As we soon get the chance to get back to the physical office, there’s some pondered to do on how both in-office and remote people can be included for a well-working hybrid office. We need workplace participation on equal terms! Meetings! With digital meetings…

AI Music and Creativity

Posted on 20 October, 202020 October, 2020 by Gunnar Mathiason

I am attending “The 2020 Joint Conference on AI Music Creativity” this week. I was not aware of the advanced ML usage in music co-creation. There are many algorithmic tools available that actually do musical composition and real-time musical co-creation. I was stunned by the demo of the saxophonist that solo-dueled live together with an…

Learn how to write better

Posted on 24 September, 202021 October, 2020 by Gunnar Mathiason

I have looked for good written sources of how to develop academic writing, targeting both PhD students and myself. I found the following three books and I do recommend them. Many people in the world who speak English professionally are non-native, and proper academic writing is hard but also needed. To me, the following reading…

RESEARCH BIO

Senior lecturer (Docent, PhD) in computer science, with a research background in analysis of complex systems, distributed systems and databases, and applied ML.

The research focus in recent years includes explainable and trustworthy AI systems. Along with dramatically increased capabilities of algorithms, there is a now need for designing AI system intentionally for capabilities of for instance explaining AI model uncertainty and AI model assumptions. The adaptation degree of AI used in  new critical application areas will depend on how transparent automated decisions will be.

Since 2016, Dr. Mathiason has developed multiple collaborations with the Swedish steel industry with the intention to increase utilization of AI in the steel industry. Leading the recent projects Dataflow (Outokumpu, Jernkontoret, funded by VINNOVA), Swedish Metal (SSAB and Sandvik SMT, funded by KK), and now INSITE-X (Ovako, Ouokumpu, funded by VINNOVA) several novel papers were published on advanced process analysis using deep learning (DL): In Dataflow, DL was used for revealing the exact part steel sheet shapes determining telescoping errors, while in Swedish Metal a complex steel converter process was modelled using DL. The new project INSITE-X (Ovako and Outokumpu) will use DL to learn a detailed digital twin from only high-resolution data to model dynamic in-production machine behavior.

In 2019, Dr. Mathiason was appointed by Jernkontoret for delivering texts on the strategic utilization of AI in industry for further developing the research agenda of VINNOVA’s Strategic Innovation Program Metallic Material. Dr. Mathiason has also been an adjunct member of Jernkontoret’s Board of Digitalization since 2019.
